The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised the animation, visuals, writing, music, and vocal performances. It has earned $ 1 billion worldwide, has the highest worldwide opening of all time for an animated film, and is the seventh highest grossing animated film of the time and the eighth highest grossing film of 2019, as well as the 37th highest grossing film of all time.
King Agnarr of Arendelle told a story to his young children, Elsa and Anna, that their grandfather, King Runeard, made a pact with the neighboring Northuldra tribe by building a dam in their homeland, the Wonder Forest. However, a fight ensued, which resulted in Runeard’s death.
The battle angered the Earth, Fire, Water, and Air elemental spirits of the forest. The spirits disappeared and a wall of mist trapped everyone in the Magic Forest. Agnarr narrowly escapes with help from an unknown rescuer.
Three years after her coronation, Elsa celebrates autumn in the kingdom with Anna, Olaf the snowman, Kristoff the ice harvester, and Kristoff’s reindeer, Sven.
When Elsa heard a mysterious voice calling out to her, she followed suit and unconsciously awakened the elemental spirits, which plagued Arendelle, forcing everyone in the kingdom to flee.
Grand Pabbie and the Troll colony arrive at Arendelle and Pabbie informs them that they must rectify things by discovering the truth about the kingdom’s past.
Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven embark on the Magic Forest, following the mysterious voice. A wind spirit, in the form of a tornado, appeared and swept away everyone in its vortex. Elsa stops him by firing a stream of snow, forming a set of ice sculptures.
They find the carving is a picture of their father’s past and that their mother, Iduna, was a Northuldra who saved Agnarr. They met with Northuldra and Arendell’s troops who were still at odds with each other.
A fire spirit appears, Elsa finds it to be a restless magical salamander and calms her down. Elsa and Anna form a truce between the army and Northuldra by explaining that their mother is Northuldran and their father is Arendellian.
Elsa then learns the existence of a fifth spirit that will unite humans and natural wonders.
Elsa continues to head north with Anna and Olaf. They find their parents’ shipwreck and a map with a route to Ahtohallan, a mythical river that is said to have an explanation for the past.
Feeling guilty that her parents were lost at sea looking for answers to her magical powers, Elsa decided to travel alone and send Anna and Olaf to safety. Elsa met and tamed Nokk, the water spirit who guarded the seas to Ahtohallan.
There, Elsa discovers that the voice is Iduna’s summons, and that her strength is a gift from a natural miracle because Iduna’s selfless action saved Agnarr, making him the fifth spirit to unite the differences.
Elsa puts on her mother’s coat and also learns that the dam was built as a ruse to reduce Northuldra’s resources because Runeard doesn’t like the tribe’s connection to magic, and Runeard is the one who initiated the conflict. Elsa sends this information to Anna before being frozen, after venturing into the most dangerous part of Ahtohallan, which in turn causes Olaf to fade away.
Anna receives Elsa’s message and concludes that the dam must be destroyed in order for peace to be restored. Anna finds and awakens sleeping giant earth spirits, and lures them towards a dam, which is crushed by boulders thrown by the giants.
Elsa melts out and returns to Arendelle, stopping the flood from the dam being destroyed. When the fog walls disappear, Elsa reunites with Anna and brings Olaf back to life. Kristoff proposed to Anna, who accepted.
Elsa explains that she and Anna are now a bridge between people and magic spirits. Anna becomes the queen of Arendelle, while Elsa becomes the protector of the Magic Forest who regularly visits Arendelle as peace is restored in all lands.
