Moana is told as the son of the chief of the Motunui tribe, in the Pacific Islands. The 16 year old girl was set to continue the throne of her father, therefore since childhood she was raised to become a leader.

As a child, Moana also tried to comply with her parents’ requests. But, at the same time he felt anxious. Despite growing up in islands and surrounded by vast nature, his parents forbade him to approach the sea.

In fact, just playing on the beach is not allowed. The reason was that the sea was considered dangerous for the Motunui tribe.

Not only him, fishermen there are limited to fishing only in the lagoon, the sea is relatively shallow and calm. Even so, Moana’s conscience kept saying something else, for her the sea was so friendly to her and there was no need to be afraid to sail it.

Until his time, the source of life on the island was in trouble. Fish are not caught, many coconut trees have died. As a leader, Moana also made the decision for the fishermen to fish further out to sea, passing through the rock which was allegedly made by more fish.

However, his father did not approve of his wish. Moana was confused and looked for a way out. Grandma who knew Moana’s passion then gave support. Moana then decided to try it herself and prove what kind of danger her father was afraid of.

Secretly Moana sailed with her pig named Pua. However, on the way he was hit by a storm that turned his boat upside down. Moana decided to come back again.

He then believed that what he said his father was true. Seeing Moana getting discouraged, her grandmother tried to revive her. Grandma Moana knows that her grandson has great enthusiasm and was chosen by the universe to change the living conditions there.

In the next adventure, Moana meets Maui (Dwayne Johnson), a formidable demigod who is accidentally drawn by sea forces. Together with Maui, he sailed and experienced various kinds of challenging things, such as dealing with huge monsters and adventures to beat themselves.

The search for identity

Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) tells the story of a brave princess who wants to get out of her comfort zone on her island to go on a tense journey and at the same time save her people.

Among the princess stories that are often made by Disney, where they meet their lover or soulmate as their helper, this time Disney innovates. From the hands of director Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Princess & the Frog), Moana appears as a figure who tries to determine her own destiny, taking steps without expecting a prince to come to her aid.

Instead, Moana was instead faced with a demigod who was annoying and at odds with her understanding. That then becomes a separate story conflict and is different from other Disney stories.

However, Moana is also not described as being completely selfish in doing everything on her own belief as an independent woman. He kept thinking about the pros and cons, considering all possibilities, by accepting input from people around him.

Moana carries a lot of moral messages. Among other things, persistence in what is believed, and how the universe also supports.

The film, which was written by the script by John Musker, Ron Clements, Taika Waititi and Jared Bush, presents a story full of fun adventures with a bit of drama from Moana’s journey. Some of them brought laughter, such as the ridiculousness of Heihei’s pet chicken who was carried away, his meeting with the demigod character Mau’i, facing evil monsters, to Moana’s own inner battle.
