Two bats living at Holiday Hill Farm, Insectivorous Boris and Insect-loving Bella, encounter an unusual sight in the Pumpkin Garden and rush off to recount their discovery to the ranch scarecrow, Jack: young, ordinary and gourd. square, identifying as Spookley.

Jack loves Spookley, but Little Tom, a small pumpkin attached by tendrils to a much larger Big Tom, immediately begins to intimidate Spookley and says that only round pumpkins are real pumpkins. Jack quickly stopped Little Tom’s teasing.

Jack arranges the pumpkins into patches to enter the “Jack-a-Lympics” competition, a sports competition (“not affiliated in any way, form or form to … this other game”) designed to determine “Patch Choice”. The three spiders, showing sympathy for Spookley, decide to help him in Jack-a-Lympics just so they can win his prize, a candy crown. Throughout the competition, Big Tom and Little Tom were repeatedly disqualified for using their vines to give them an unfair advantage, making Bobo third place, a wasted gourd, winning most events. Spookley has failed miserably in all events, discouraging him.

As Bobo is crowned the winner and the spider leaves Spookley to take his crown, a gust of wind hits the pumpkin, growing all over the pumpkin and pinning Jack under a burning tree branch. Spookley, being square, doesn’t roll when the wind hits him (unlike other pumpkins), and with a few moments of ingenuity, keeps Jack from being burnt alive and his fellow pumpkins from being swept away in the river. The other pumpkins expressed gratitude for saving them.

After a storm, the farmer goes to the plot to assess the damage and finds Spookley. The farmer was fascinated by Spookley’s square shape and decided to make the square pumpkin his personal jack-o’-lantern.

The Honeydoos, three honey singers singing in the style of the Pointer Sisters, were also featured. Bobby Pickett makes a cameo appearance towards the end of the film; His hit song “Monster Mash” is mentioned in one of the music numbers “Transylvania Twist” (with a continuity error because the latter claims that the two dances are not the same, while “Monster Mash” states that he ‘they are identical). Troiano and Zahn had previously written new music for Pickett’s 1995 film adaptation of Monster Mash.
