In a space battle near Coruscant between Republic and Separtist, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi plan to save Supreme Chancellor Palpatine who has been kidnapped by Separatist commander General Grievous. After battling several droids and entering the Grievous ship, the Jedi faces Count Dooku, who fights them off in a lightsaber duel. After Dooku knocked Obi-Wan out, Anakin fought and killed Dooku at Palpatine’s orders. After a skirmish of Grievous, who later fled, the Jedi made an emergency landing at Coruscant. There, Anakin met his wife, Padmé Amidala, who was pregnant. At first she was happy, but then Anakin began to think that Padmé would die in childbirth.
Palpatine placed Anakin on the Jedi Council as his representative, but Anakin was not given the title of Jedi Master and was ordered to supervise the Chancellor. Disappointed at not being allowed into the Council, Anakin begins to distrust the Jedi and becomes closer to Palpatine, who informs him that the dark side of the Force has the power to stop death. On the planet Utapau, Obi-Wan leads an army of clones and fights Grievous. Obi-Wan wins and kills him. When Palpatine reveals that he is Sith Lord Darth Sidious, Anakin reports it to Jedi Master Mace Windu. In a lightsaber duel, Windu weakens Palpatine by bouncing her enemy’s Lightning Force back. Anakin prevents Mace Windu from killing Palpatine so that Palpatine can kill Windu. Because of his desire to save Padmé, Anakin agreed to become a student of Palpatine, who gave him the new name Darth Vader.
Palpatine orders the Clone Troopers to kill the Jedi Master who leads them, and sends Vader and his clone troopers to kill everyone in the Jedi Temple. Vader then goes to the volcanic planet Mustafar to kill the Separatist leader who is hiding there. Palpatine gave speeches in the Senate and turned the Republic into the Galactic Empire, and also made himself Emperor.
Upon learning of Anakin’s betrayal, Obi-Wan and Master Jedi Yoda split up to face Vader and Sidious. Not believing Obi-Wan’s words that Anakin had entered the dark side, Padmé went to Mustafar. When Padmé realized what Vader had done, he tried to return it, but Vader accused Padmé of betraying him and choked him until he passed out. Obi-Wan, sneaking aboard the Padmé, battles Vader in a duel which ends with Obi-Wan cutting off both Vader’s left leg and arm. Vader burned by a river of lava. After picking up his former student’s lightsaber, Obi-Wan goes to save Padmé. Meanwhile, Yoda faced Palpatine, but retreated after their duel ended in a draw.
On the asteroid Polis Massa, Padmé gave birth to Luke and Leia. With his last breath, Padmé tells Obi-Wan that there is still goodness in Vader. Meanwhile, Palpatine finds Vader still alive on Mustafar and takes him to Coruscant, where his damaged body is repaired with cybernetics hands and a respirator. When told Padmé died because of his actions, Vader screamed sadly, the remains of humanity coming out of him. As Vader oversaw the construction of the Death Star, Padmé was buried. Knowing that the twins must be hidden from the Empire, Senator Bail Organa adopts Leia and takes her to Alderaan, while Luke is brought to her family on Tatooine. Organa allowed C-3PO and R2-D2 to remain in Tantive IV and erased the memory of C-3PO. Yoda taught Obi-Wan how to communicate with Qui-Gon Jinn’s spirit before going to Dagobah. Obi-Wan takes Luke to Tatooine and gives Luke to his uncle and aunt, where Obi-Wan watches Luke until the time is right to fight the Empire.
